A major goal of the Houston Independent School District (HISD) is to increase student achievement and to create a District-wide College Bound Culture. Yet, poverty and lack of adult academic achievement burden young people and families in many of Houston's neighborhoods.
In order to help develop a College Bound Culture, Community Organizing to Reform Education Project (CORE) has been established, particularly at Jones and Worthing High Schools, to fill the needed gaps.
The objectives for college readiness success through CORE are:
The primary goal of CORE is to become the facilitating partner, bringing students, parents, and the community together to understand how to advocate for college readiness for every student in the Jones and Worthing High Schools feeder patterns. This will be implemented through community engagement in the re-design process and other needed reforms.
