HAUL CORE Project

Positive images of the future are a powerful and magnetic force . . . They draw us on and energize us, give us courage and will to take on important initiatives." William James

A major goal of the Houston Independent School District (HISD) is to increase student achievement and to create a District-wide College Bound Culture. Yet, poverty and lack of adult academic achievement burden young people and families in many of Houston's neighborhoods.

In order to help develop a College Bound Culture, Community Organizing to Reform Education Project (CORE) has been established, particularly at Jones and Worthing High Schools, to fill the needed gaps.

The objectives for college readiness success through CORE are:

  1. Students will be trained and developed as student Advocates for Education Reform
  2. Every student will understand and know the required courses needed before they enter high school
  3. Students in high school will receive information that directs them to the courses they will need to meet the requirements for college.
  4. Parents will be developed as Advocates for Education Reform.
  5. HAUL will build a Community-Based Education Reform.

The primary goal of CORE is to become the facilitating partner, bringing students, parents, and the community together to understand how to advocate for college readiness for every student in the Jones and Worthing High Schools feeder patterns. This will be implemented through community engagement in the re-design process and other needed reforms.
