The year 2017 will lasts in our memory banks for many years to come. Many of those memories dealt with heartbreak and disaster. We know so well the impact of the floods in Texas and Puerto Rico, we know of the wildfires in California and the blizzards now gripping our northern and mid-western states. Our nation in peril as our healthcare is systematically dismantled, schools under-resourced, and our democracy toyed with pitting groups against one another by foreign adversaries. It seems as though the Allstate “Mayhem Man” has become real for everyone. Regardless of your race, creed, color, economic status, zip code, gene pool or anything else, we are all subject to the type of disaster that can set you back and give you a new perspective on life. We’ve become more sensitive to situations where a person may not have enough food, clothing, shelter, medical assistance, finances or other basic human needs addressed. We have come to the realization that all it takes is one major event and our life’s work can be destroyed in an instant. Then, it's a matter of finding help to ensure the setback doesn’t become permanent.  Unfortunately, this story has become a harsh reality for too many of our fellow Houstonians. To have the will to overcome is one thing, but having the resources available to assist you is equally important.

Agencies like HAUL and many others each play a unique role in helping our communities get back on their feet. Not just during times of natural disasters and major devastation, but the everyday challenges people face in theses essential categories of the human condition.  Both daily and in times of great crisis, we make sure our communities have access to our trusted counseling, programmatic services, and guidance that is needed when people are lost and in transition. We steer and direct our fellow agencies that provide food, clothing, healthcare and all of the other essential services people need in times of uncertainty and fear. We are proud to be a part of that fabric of organizations that is there in times such as these. Someone may ask why do we still need organizations like the Urban League, what value do they provide? This past year more than 10,000 persons answered that question by seeking our services. If you were fortunate enough to not be one of those persons in 2017, that’s wonderful news. But what about your neighbors, your friends, your fellow community members we call Houston. When Harvey hit and they came to the George R. Brown, wet and hungry, and without a place or a plan to get back on their feet, we were there. When they participated in a class that opened the door to employment allowing them to provide once again for their family, or for the more than 70 person’s that were able to take a course and buy a home in 2017, yes Urban League’s and other non-profits still matter.

As we say goodbye to 2017 and the Houston Area Urban League embarks upon its 50th year of service to this community, we are proud to be there for those in need. No one knows what 2018 holds but with your financial help and collaborative support, we will continue to be ready for whatever comes our way, even if this time the Mayhem Man knocks on your door or mine. The Urban League will respond, just as we have for the past 50 years, serving the needs of our communities.
