The Houston Area Urban League presents the #myUrbanLeaguestory Movement

March 1, 2018 In Press Releases

A Social Campaign dedicated to highlighting the impact the organization has had on many entities across the city for 50 years

Houston, Texas (March 1, 2018) – The Houston Area Urban League (HAUL) has launched a campaign that highlights the contributions the organization has made to countless Houstonians over the years through a series of videos. These videos share the stories of many individuals who were impacted by a HAUL service or program. They include volunteers, community partners and leaders, employees, and clients. The Houston Area Urban League will highlight the videos on the My Urban League Story website, our social media pages and at our 50th Anniversary Equal Opportunity Day Gala on June 16, 2018. The gala coincides with the 50th year of the Houston Area Urban League.

“HAUL has been instrumental in my business’ growth and development,” said Tiffany L. Williams, creative director and CEO of Twice Media Productions, LLC. Ms. Williams has shared her #myUrbanLeaguestory on how she began her journey on becoming a businesses owner. When she arrived to Houston, a friend introduced her to HAUL’s auxiliary group, The Houston Area Urban League Young Professionals. She took part in the organization’s Small Business Development University Program. “As a newcomer to the city, with no business experience, the class really helped me gain the knowledge I needed to scale my company,” she said. The course is part of the many services from the Workforce and Economic Development program that HAUL provides. The Economic Development department provides small business entrepreneurs with essential skills such as business development, planning, and access to capital through critical instruction such as the Small Business Development University program and networking opportunities.

“I love that the Urban League is focused on providing tools and resources to people, so they can turn their lives around and hopefully give right back,” said Jasmine Turner, president of the Houston Area Urban League Young Professionals. She also was impacted in positive ways because of HAUL’s influence, as stated in her #myUrbanLeaguestory. “Not only does the mission of the Urban League align with my core values, but I have gained so much as a professional on this journey,” she adds.

Through these captivating short stories, we are able to see that HAUL’s mission to provide economic self-reliance, parity, and power is being realized but we can not stop there. We would love to hear your Urban League story. We invite you to share your story by uploading a one-minute selfie video, highlighting your experience with the Urban League (or any of its affiliates), to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the hashtag #MyUrbanLeagueStory. To help us with our fundraising goals, we are asking that you donate a minimum of $5 to participate in the campaign.
