Texas School Ready
Texas School Ready (TSR) is a comprehensive, research-based model serving children from birth to age five. It ensures that high-need, at-risk children receive targeted instruction in critical school readiness skills. Since its launch in 2003, thousands of early childhood programs across Texas have implemented the TSR model. As the program has expanded, researchers at the Children’s Learning Institute at the University of Texas Health Science Center have collected extensive data to monitor changes in teachers’ instructional practices and improvements in students’ school readiness. The results speak to the program’s innovation and effectiveness.
The Houston Area Urban League (HAUL) serves as one of 25 lead agencies for Texas School Ready. These lead agencies partner with early childhood educators in their communities to deliver a range of comprehensive services, including professional development, coaching, child progress monitoring, and access to curriculum and classroom materials. Teachers enrolled in TSR participate in an intensive training program designed to help children become better prepared for kindergarten and beyond.
Multiple research studies have confirmed that Texas School Ready positively impacts teaching practices across various settings including public Pre-K, Head Start, and private childcare classrooms. Teachers participating in TSR Comprehensive demonstrate increased responsiveness to individual student needs and greater use of language-building strategies, such as quality book reading, purposeful conversations, and oral language instruction. Notably, significant gains have also been observed in emergent literacy practices, responsive teaching, classroom organization, and lesson planning.
