Empowering Communities. Changing Lives.

Supporting Youth to Become Ready for “College, Work, and Life” While Supporting Family Engagement

It takes the collective effort of many to ensure a child’s success into adulthood. At times, it requires going above and beyond to give young people a real chance at a successful future. The Houston Area Urban League’s Education and Youth Development (EYD) services are designed to meet that need—offering urban youth, regardless of their background, meaningful opportunities to thrive.

Through our core programs, which are grounded in an educational support model and evidence-based practices, HAUL/EYD prepares students for college, careers, and life. Our work is shaping the next generation of leaders, innovators, and community advocates for the 21st century. Preparing students for the future is not just our mission; it is a life-changing opportunity for the youth we serve.

Core Programs

Project Ready 2.0 is a Post-Secondary Success College Access Curriculum, offering a comprehensive approach to meeting both the academic and personal needs of youth in the Urban League Movement. Unlike traditional college access programs that primarily focus on academic preparation, this curriculum also prioritizes students’ personal and social readiness for college.

UW Early Childhood/Youth Development

HAUL’s Project Ready Education & Youth Development focuses on sustained literacy development and college and career readiness. Through Family and Community Engagement (FACE) programming, families, communities, and schools work together to support student success, resulting in stronger communities. These services amplify the voice of families and advance literacy by addressing students’ needs, helping every student reach their full potential.

The program provides students with mentoring, tutoring and service learning on campus. Students receive additional instruction using curriculums such as the Search Institutes 40 Developmental Assets, STEM, Adolescent Literacy Tool Box, Prepared 4 Life, and Four Dimensions of College Readiness.

The Program will ensure students graduating from High Schools are prepared for College culture and success, by strengthening our partnerships with HBCU institutions. The Program will provide services to develop parents’/caregivers’ knowledge and skills to implement the dimension of college/career readiness, college admissions process, college and financial aid processes, and understanding of NCAA Eligibility Requirements. The program will integrate academic, life skill-building career exploration through three major components: 1) Academic Development, 2) Social Development, and 3) College-Career Culture and Awareness.

Texas School Ready (TSR) is a comprehensive, research-based model serving children from birth to age five. It ensures that high-need, at-risk children receive targeted instruction in critical school readiness skills. Since its launch in 2003, thousands of early childhood programs across Texas have implemented the TSR model. As the program has expanded, researchers at the Children’s Learning Institute at the University of Texas Health Science Center have collected extensive data to monitor changes in teachers’ instructional practices and improvements in students’ school readiness. The results speak to the program’s innovation and effectiveness.

Summer Programs

Providing Interactive Activities To Promote Educational Development

One of the ongoing challenges faced by parents and educators is the summer learning loss that often occurs when students are out of school. To help reduce this loss, it’s important to provide students with engaging experiences that support both educational and cultural growth. Our summer programs offer interactive activities and field trips designed to strengthen students’ competence, boost their confidence, and build character.

EYD events empower the youth from various communities throughout the Houston area. These events are possible through your support and your attendance. Spread the word about what HAUL is doing to empower the youth of today by coming to an event that will hopefully provide you with the opportunity to understand the vision that we have for our youth. We hope you will join us.
