Buffalo Bayou Canoe Competition
“Empowered to Live Healthy”

The Houston Area Urban League’s Young Professionals (HAULYP) will be participating in the Buffalo Bayou Regatta’s 38th annual canoe competition, as an opportunity to be a part of a City-wide outdoors activity as well as to continue our ultimate task of reaching our annual fundraising goal.

In line with our “I AM EMPOWERED” campaign we are promoting healthy lifestyles and community involvement.

Race Begins at San Felipe and Voss
Finish line festivities at downtown’s Sesquicentennial Park.

This is a free event, so please come out and show your support by cheering-on the HAULYP teams!!!

HAULYP’s fundraising goal for this event is $1,200.00
We ask that every member contribute a $10 as a way to assist in helping to achieve that goal.

Limited $40 participation slots are still available.

Melissa Ellison is the co-owner of ServiceMaster Professional Cleaning, a licensed family-owned janitorial franchise of ServiceMaster Clean. This business provides janitorial, post construction, carpet care, floor treatment, and green cleaning services to businesses such as offices, hospitals, labs and churches. She strongly upholds ServiceMaster Clean’s corporate objectives to honor God in all we do, to excel with customers, to help people develop and for business to grow profitably.

ServiceMaster Clean and Shane Battier, of the Houston Rockets, collaborated to create the Shane Battier Scholarship Program. The Shane Battier Scholarship is designed to expand commercial cleaning business ownership among women and minorities throughout the United States. This scholarship catapulted Melissa to provide premier janitorial services throughout the Houston area.  

Melissa enjoys being an active member of Outreach Community Church. She is the Director of all outreach community activities and coordinates the church’s gift giving projects for Texas Children Hospital and Oakmont Nursing Home. She loves to travel when her schedule permits and spending time with family.

Eric Miller Jr. has been active since he joined HAULYP in 2005 and he currently serves on the Community Outreach and Membership committees.  Eric received his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering from University of Tulsa and his MBA from the University of Phoenix.  Eric currently works as a Senior Engineer at El Paso Corporation.  He has been instrumental in a number of HAULYP programs such as YP University, Museum Crawl and the National Day of Service.  He also assisted in organizing the HAULYP Holiday Social and a number of New Member Orientations.  Eric believes everyone has the capacity and responsibility of empowering their community.  He lives this belief as he continues to devote his time, money and ideas to the movement.
