Housing Programs

Started in 1975, the goal of the Houston Area Urban League Housing Department is to provide safe, decent, and affordable housing to low-income families in the community.The plan is consistent with the five strategic goals that are implicit in the development and operation of U.S. Department of housing & Urban Development.

The five strategic goals are:
  • Strengthen the housing market to bolster the economy and protect consumers
  • Meet the need for quality affordable rental homes
  • Utilize housing as a platform for improving quality of life
  • Build inclusive and sustainable communities free from discrimination
  • Long term sustainability

To accomplish this goal the housing department provides the following services:

  • First Time Homebuyers Class
  • Financial Education Workshop
  • Foreclosure Prevention Program
  • Credit Enhancement Program
  • One-On-One Counseling: Pre/Post Home Purchase, Mortgage Default, and
  • Foreclosure Intervention
  • Fair Housing

First Time Homebuyers Workshop

The First Time Homebuyers Workshop is designed to assist low to moderate-income families with the home buying process. Completion of this class entitles qualified families with down payment and closing cost assistance. Classes are in English and Spanish covering:

  • Preparing for homeownership: Creating a household budget and deciding how expensive a home you can buy
  • Shopping for a home: Decide what you want and negotiate the purchase price• Obtaining a mortgage: Apply for a loan and learn the loan process
  • Closing: Learn what happens at closing
  • Life as a homeowner: Maintain your household budget and meet you objective as a borrower

Classes are held from 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Financial Education Workshop
The Financial Literacy Program assists families with developing and maintaining a
budget,basic understanding of their finances and FREE credit analysis .

Foreclosure Intervention Program
If you are behind on your mortgage facing default or foreclosure, you are not alone. The Houston Area Urban League can help! HAUL offers default and foreclosure intervention counseling to individuals that are delinquent on their mortgage and facing foreclosure. Please do not allow pride to stand in the way of saving your home and your credit. Call (713) 393-8751 or CookieM@haul.org  and receive free confidential counseling from HUD certified counselors. The Houston Area Urban League wants to help you save your home!

Credit Enhancement Program
The goal of the Houston Area Urban League's Credit Enhancement Program is to assist First Time Homebuyer's with credit blemishes and low credit scores (FICO Score) to achieve their "dream" of homeownership by participation in an extensive "one-on-one credit-counseling program to improve their credit rating within a
specific time frame.

The Credit Enhancement Program is also available to other individuals and families, not currently in the process of buying a home, but interested in improving their credit worthiness by increasing their credit scores. Credit scores is a critical factor used by lending institutions in making loan approval.

Housing Counseling Program
The Houston Area Urban League Housing Counseling Program is a United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) approved housing counseling agency that focuses on individual counseling to customers experiencing housing problems.

Pre/Post Home Purchase Counseling
The Houston Area Urban League provides confidential and intensive one-on-one counseling and works with a family to improve their credit rating within a specific time period.

Mortgage Default Counseling
The Houston Area Urban League works with families in time of financial difficulties to
prevent mortgage default.

Foreclosure Prevention
The Houston Area Urban League counsels and assists families with alternative options
to foreclosure.

HOUSTON AREA URBAN LEAGUE FAIR HOUSING CENTER

The Houston Area Urban League advocate and provide direct assistance to victims of fair housing and fair lending laws. 

HAUL will conduct group outreach and education as well as individual housing counseling.

Texas Veteran Commission awarded HAUL Housing Department a grant for Veteran Housing Support Services Program. HAUL's Veteran Housing Support Service Program provides services to veterans, surviving spouse of a veteran or Veteran dependent. The Veteran Housing Support Program purpose is to bridge the gap in housing of veterans to divert homelessness for 73 veterans. HAUL’s Housing Support Program for Veterans has defined its service delivery as outreach, intake, assessment, housing counseling, housing placement and financial assistance. HAUL provides a comprehensive approach to reach veterans based on the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing model.
